Lichgates Hidden World Blog Tour ; Review & Giveaway

I’m really pleased Chocolate Chunky Munkie is part of the blog tour for The Lichgates.  I have to say that when I read the blurb I was quite excited; this sounded just my kind of book.  For my stop of the blog tour I have my review of The Lichgates.

Also check out the awesome giveaway being held by author S M Boyce, there are some wonderful prizes up for grabs.  You can find links to the giveaway at the bottom of the page.

Goodreads Synopsis:

The Grimoire turns its own pages and can answer any question asked of it, and Kara Magari is its next target. She has no idea what she's getting herself into when she stumbles across the old book while hiking a hidden trail. Once she opens it, she's thrown into Ourea: a beautiful world full of terrifying things that all want the Grimoire's secrets. Everyone in this new world is trying to find her, and most want to control her.

Braeden Drakonin grew up in Ourea, and all he’s ever known of life is lying. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. He has one question to ask the book – one question that can fix everything in his broken life – and he’s not letting Kara out of his sight until he gets an answer.

There’s no escaping Ourea. There’s no going back now.

My Review:

I was given a copy of this book to review fom the author.

The writing style of this book is very descriptive and detailed.  This meant that the book is not a light and easy read, you have to take a step back and soak up all the rich detail.  This book is very imaginative and I liked the fact that is was set partly in another world.

I will say though that it did take a couple of chapters to settle into the story. Once I got to know the main character a litte more and settle into the flow of the writing style everything was fine.

This is predominantly a fantasy story, it does get a little dark at times.  So don't expect this new world S.M Boyce has created to be all sugar and light.

My favorite character would have to be Kara, she seems a very likeable and multi-layered character.  I was really pleased to see how her character developed throughout the book. She is thrust into a new world and has to adapt with the demands and tasks she has a a Vagabond.  Her purpose as a Vagabond is to bring peace to the four kingdoms, in so doing this it will then fulfill the goal of the first ever Vagabond who died over a thousand years before.  So as you can see..... she has a lot to deal with and a lot resting on her shoulders.  I really liked Kara's spirit and the way she was able to handle situations, lesser people would certainly have crumbled.

Overall I thought this book was a worthy read and I would recommend it to lovers of the fantasy genre.  This is the first book in the trilogy and I have to say it has started off really well.  It certainly opens things up for the next book in the series.  I very much look forward to reading more!

Story: 3/5 - A worthy read.

Good review. I agree that this is definitely not a light and quick read due to the detailing needed to paint the world for the reader. But I will definitely say it is worth taking the time to read all the details, as the world is astounding!

I, too, cannot wait until the next one is out :)

Like you, when I read this book I found that it took me a while to adjust. The chief thing that sold this book to me wasn't just the good writing--it was the imagination. I feel as though alot of fantasy nowadays(especially YA, which is more popular than ever) follows the same tropes and formulas. Granted, the whole "person enters a magical world" base isn't new, but the fact that Boyce did something imaginative with it is what really made me appreciate this book. The care and detail taken to create different races and creatures, whereas most authors nowadays just recycle creatures from folklore and myth. I'm really looking forward to the next book.
