Summary

Propelled by an insurmountable sense of desperation, Stevie Burke is recklessly abandoning home, husband, and outwardly contented life under cover of night; at last resigned to defeat in her long battle against the tortured memories of her past.
Days later, lost and floundering in a dreary motel room without plan or destination, it is a long ago song playing on the radio that gently tugs Stevie back through the dust of remembrance. 1957 – The last summer spent at the ancient house overlooking the North Atlantic. A season which had unfolded with abundant promise, but then spiraled horribly out of control – torn apart by a shattering tragedy that remains splintered in fragments upon her soul. And it is only now, when Stevie at last lifts her eyes to stare deep into the heart of her long sequestered memories, that the long held secrets of past and future are at last unveiled...
It began in much the way of all the perfect golden summers at her aunt and uncle’s beach house. Stevie is in love with Jake, an intriguing deaf boy; so thoroughly absorbed in her new romance that she easily ignores the evidences of breakdown in her aunt and uncle’s once blissful marriage and the hairline indicators of her sister Eleanor’s role in their faltered relationship. Not until Stevie and Jake slip away from the farewell bonfire on the beach, anxious for a private moment on this last night together, will she finally be forced to confront the ugly truth of those things unfolding around her. The resulting tragedy shattering her family and leaving her emotionally paralyzed.
Although desperate to leave behind the gnawing emptiness and press of memories suffocating her life, Stevie remains helplessly bound to the family farm. She eventually lands a job as an advice columnist for the local newspaper, and only then does her life finally make a turn toward steady ground, her new position as advisor to the troubled allowing her to address her own deepest feelings of love and loss.
Even then, Stevie is infuriated when her mother hires a farm hand, Ash Waterman, irrationally rejecting his overtures of friendship – drawn to him as passionately as she feels determined to push him away.
Her silent battle is continuous; an insurmountable sense of guilt holding her to the firm conviction that she is responsible for her family’s suffering. Despite Ash’s patient love and support she is unable to smooth the painful cracks etched deep into her memories, continuing to sacrifice her future in order to shelter the sins of the past. And it is only as Stevie feels her life spiraling out of control, that she at last comes to understand the true secret of the lies she has so diligently guarded.

 My review:

I found this book to be very well written, there is an immense amount of detail to the writing. So I will warn you, this is not a fast and easy read, you just have to appreciate all the rich detail and soak it up. Sometimes I found myself taking a step back just to absorb every detail.
The story is told by the main protagonist Stevie; it starts off in the present day and then regresses back to a time in her childhood where something bad happened. It just shows the effects of where something from the past can affect you in the future. I felt that as the story progressed you shared the innermost demons of Stevie. Her whole self is stripped bare and she really does bare her soul. I really did feel for her at times. It does take a little while into the story until you find out what the tragedy is, it keeps you guessing and on tenterhooks.

A powerful story of loss, guilt, discovery and romance. Ticked a lot of right boxes for me. I really could feel the heartache and emotions of the characters. I also have to say that I fell in love with Ash; he seems to be a sweet and sensitive man. It was lovely to see the chemistry between Ash and Stevie unfurl.

I would have to say that the only negative point I had about the book is that it was a little bit slow at the beginning. It did take a little while to get going, but from then on it did grip me.

Overall I really enjoyed this book; I would recommend you read this as I do think it’s a very powerful and well written book. Bravo to the author.

Photobucket

Story rating 4/5 – A very emotive and powerful read.
Cover Rating 3/5 – I liked the cover, but I do find it doesn’t grab me.

** Thank you to the author Barbara Forte Abate for supplying me with a review copy of the book**

About The Author:

Barbara Forte Abate was born in Millbrook, New York, the middle of five children. After graduating from Millbrook High School, she married young and promptly launched into the joys of family life, in short order becoming the mother of four very fabulous children, and along the way earning a doctorate from the University of Real Life.

Initially having settled in Franklin, New Jersey, she has lived with her family in a wonderful historic home in Chester County, PA, for the past fifteen years.

While increasingly challenged for several years by old house renovations and raising her children, Barbara never considered abandoning her dreams of writing. Most often composing her stories on yellow legal pads while babies napped and supper simmered (and sometimes burned) on the stove; piling up the pages until the time at last arrived to borrow a friend's typewriter and transfer her longhand scribbles onto finished pages.

While that particular milestone transpired some twenty years ago, and the aforementioned first novel has since lived a quietly rejected life in a rarely visited closet, Barbara's passion for writing has continued at a gallop. Her debut novel, "The Secret of Lies" was released on June 30, 2010.

The Time Will Come #21

Every Thursday, Jodie at Books For Company hosts The Time Will Come, a weekly meme in which we list a book that we really want to read or keep meaning to get to. These are mostly books that have been on the TBR shelf for awhile now but also they can be books that have just come into my home.  I have a massive to-read pile, it seems to be growing by the day.....

If you'd like to join in?
  • Pick a book you have been meaning to read
  • Do a post telling us about the book
  • Link the post up in the linky on Jodie's blog.
  • Visit the other blogs!

Here is my choice for this weeks Time Will Come:
Goodreads Synopsis:
Alex has run away and is hiking through the wilderness with her dead parents’ ashes, about to say goodbye to the life she no longer wants to live. But then the world suddenly changes. An electromagnetic pulse sweeps through the sky zapping every electronic device and killing the vast majority of adults. For those spared, it’s a question of who can be trusted and who has changed... Everyone still alive has turned - some for the better (those who acquired a superhuman sense) while others for the worse (those who acquired a taste for human flesh).

Desperate to find out what happened and to avoid the zombies that are on the hunt, Alex meets up with Tom - an Army veteran who escaped one war only to find something worse at home - and Ellie, a young girl whose grandfather was killed by the electromagnetic pulse. This improvised family will have to use every ounce of courage they have just to find food, shelter, while fighting off the “Changed” and those desperate to stay alive. A tense and involving adventure with shocks and sudden plot twists that will keep teen and adult readers gripped.
I really liked the sound of this one, I'm still working my way through the zombie books on my shelf.  This one does sound quite scary though, more like a zombie apocalypse.  Perhaps I wont read this one at night, I might wake up with nightmares!!  The last zombie book I read, Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel, wasn't too bad as the main love interest believe it or not was a zombie.  I was very sceptical but hey it worked.  I hope I get round to reading this soon as I think it would be a good story.

***Review*** Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You To Know: Eleven Courageous Canines Tell All by Hy Conrad

Released: April 1st 2012
Publisher: Sourcebooks
Series:  No
Format:Digital ARC - Ebook
Source: Netgalley

Goodreads Synopsis:

A series of 115 short essays written by eleven courageous canines who are willing to tell the truth about dogs every last dirty, hairy, bit of it: why they always dash to a rug when they have to throw up, why they eat furniture when endless chew toys are nearby, and why they're always absolutely starving. Peppered with lively, clever stories and visually appealing photographs, Things Your Dog Doesn't Want You to Know is a must-have for any dog lover. It's a verbal and visual delight that is laugh-out-loud funny.
"If everyone owned a dog, we would have world peace. If everyone reads this book, they will go and get a dog and we will have taken a big step in the right direction. So this book can save the world."
Terrence McNally, playwright

My Review:

What a charming and funny book this was. A very entertaining and light read. As a dog lover I found myself chuckling and nodding in agreement at some of the antics and views of the dogs. My Chocolate Labrador doesn’t need to learn any new tricks he pretty much could have written the book. Especially the part where one dog said he was constantly hungry and was never full...... mmm... I know a certain pooch who could certainly relate to that.

The layout was so refreshing it was colourful and quirky. It really was a joy to pore over the pages. At first I thought this book would be good for children too, but there was one dog story in there that wasn’t quite suitable.

I like how the book first of all introduces all the dogs and gives a brief and hysterical description of their lives; there were some really sweet and nutty dogs mixed in. This would be a good present to give a dog lover. I know I would have loved it as a gift!!

Photobucket

Story 3/5 – I did like this book, the stories were sweet and funny.

Cover 3/5 – The cover is really cute, but it doesn’t scream buy me.

** Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for the review copy. **

Musing Mondays #4

Musing Mondays is a weekly feature hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.  Each week MizB asks a book related question and we have to give our answers.

This week’s musing asks…

Have you ever found a book out of the blue, read it, and then had it be surprisingly good — one that stuck with you for years? If so, what book was it?

I used to go to a small local charity bookshop in my nearest town and have a look through the books.  There were always new books in all the time.  I remember seeing  this book catch my eye and thought mmmm this looks like a weird and wonderful book.

It was The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. Just the title of this book made me want to read it. After reading the blurb on the back I have to say it was nothing to what I was expecting. But I thought I'd give it a try anyway and you know what..... I really really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it that  much  I went and bought another book by this author the same day, Oryx & Crake.  I still have to read Oryx & Crake by the way, but it's a book I'm saving for a rainy day.

Goodreads Synopsis: The Year of The Flood by Margaret Atwood

The sun brightens in the east, reddening the blue-grey haze that marks the distant ocean. The vultures roosting on the hydro poles fan out their wings to dry them. The air smells faintly of burning. The waterless flood - a man-made plague - has ended the world.

But two young women have survived: Ren, a young dancer trapped where she worked, in an upmarket sex club (the cleanest dirty girls in town); and Toby, who watches and waits from her rooftop garden.

Is anyone else out there?

When Professor Bacci inadvertently unlocks the biochemical key to falling in love and develops a drug capable of creating emotions indistinguishable from the real thing, he is determined that the world benefits from his discovery.

A private Swiss bank steps in, owned by the secretive Kappel family, and offers to fund Bacci’s drug. What Bacci doesn’t know is the Helmut Kappel has his own plan for abusing the drug’s power; a cynical nightmare of breathtaking arrogance far removed from Bacci’s naïve vision.

Only two people can stop Kappel’s dark vision. One is Bacci’s daughter Isabella, a doctor dedicated to saving lives. The other is Kappel’s son and heir, Max, a man raised to feel no emotion and show no pain, a killer apparently incapable of love. But before they confront Kappel they must first confront their feelings for each other.

I have to say I am a huge fan of this authors work.  I read this book a few years ago and would quite happily read it again and again.  I find his stories to be really exciting and fast paced.  Each time this author brings out a new book I'm really eager to get my hands on a copy.  This has to be one of my favoruite books by him.  If you haven't read any of his books I suggest you try them!

This book has been sat on the bookcase for a few months now.  I really love the cover, isn't it awesome. I have to say that it was the cover that first drew me to the book.  When I read the blurb I really liked the mix of paranormal and romace.  I've heard some good reviews about this book, so I think it's high time I got cracking and read it.

So here is my book for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday:

Goodreads Synopsis:

Under the bubbling hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano. Most people don't know it's there. The caldera is so large that it can only be seen from a plane or satellite. It just could be overdue for an eruption, which would change the landscape and climate of our planet.

Ashfall is the story of Alex, a teenage boy left alone for the weekend while his parents visit relatives. When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts unexpectedly, Alex is determined to reach his parents. He must travel over a hundred miles in a landscape transformed by a foot of ash and the destruction of every modern convenience that he has ever known, and through a new world in which disaster has brought out both the best and worst in people desperate for food, water, and warmth. With a combination of nonstop action, a little romance, and very real science, this is a story that is difficult to stop reading and even more difficult to forget.

This book sounds really good, a teenager trying to battle his way in a post apocalyptic world.  One where it is covered in ash because of a super volcano erupting.  Mother Nature can be very powerful at times, it just shows how insignificant man can be when things happen on a grand scale.  I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this.  It sounds interesting :)

Top Ten Tuesday #11

Every Tuesday The Broke and the Bookish  hosts Top Ten Tuesday, a meme in which a new and different top ten list appears.

This weeks Top Ten list is:

Top Ten Books On My Spring To-Be-Read list

Scarlet by A C Gaughen - This is a review book from Netgalley.  I think it's going to be my next one to read as I have been looking forward to reading it.

Straight To Hell by Michelle Scott.  I'm part of a blog tour being hosted by Dani @ Pen to Paper of book 2 in the Lilith Straigh series (Straight Shot).  So I thought I'd best get a wiggle on and read and review book one then I'm ready for the blog tour of book two.

To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee.  I have been promising my friend Julie I would read this book.  She read it about a month ago and thought it was brilliant.  I did say I would get it read, it is one book I have been meaning to read for years and years.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - Seeing as though the Hunger Games is coming out as a film I thought I'd best get book two in the series read.  No excuse really for not reading this as I loved the Hunger Games. It's also a  book I've listed  in the 2012 tbr Pile Reading Challege

Partials by Dan Wells - This is a review book from Netgalley.  I really need to crack on with some more review books.  This one looks fantastic, I am really really looking forward to reading it.

The Big Over Easy (Nursery Crimes #1) by Jasper Fforde - I'm going to a Jasper Fforde weekend book event with Dani @ Pen To Paper in June, so I could do with reading a couple more of his books.  I read Shades of Grey a little while back and loved it.  So hopefully this one will live up to the same standard.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton - This one I am really looking forward to.  I haven't had it long but I am dying to read it.  The blurb sounds wonderful :)

Timeless by Gail Carriger - Oh how I love this series!  This book was only released a few weeks ago and I just had to get my hands on a copy.  I will be looking forward to seeing what Alexia gets up to :)

Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver - I really enjoyed Delirium and look forward to seeing what happens next.  One of those books I have been really looking forward to being released.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake - This book had been on my wishlist for months, so it was lovely to be able to get my hands on a copy. I can't wait to read it.

***Review*** BeSwitched by Molly Snow

Photobucket

Released: September 14th 2011
Publisher:Smashwords
Series:  Yes #1 in the BeSwitched series
Format:E-book
Source: Given to me for review by Author
Goodreads Synopsis
When a magical black cat, Surla, runs away from her bombastic witch, Idis, she has no idea that she will soon be living as a teenage girl, confronting both the mean girls and the popular—and very cute—guys of Washington High on a daily basis.

While Surla may look like Cathy, her peers notice a dramatic change in her personality when she starts standing up for herself, dressing differently, snagging dates, and picking up strange habits. Meanwhile, the witch Idis is a flaming red-haired fury as she awkwardly tries to fit into society. She must hunt down her familiar in order to be able to continue performing spells. In spite of their circumstances, Surla and Cathy learn more about themselves and gain great self esteem by being each other. Not only this, but the usual drama and young love in high school life is kindled in BeSwitched as Todd, the handsome quarterback, shows sincere interest in Cathy. The "curse" of being BeSwitched winds up being the most purr-fect secret these new best friends could ever have!

My Review:
I was given a copy of this book to review from the author.

The story kicks off with Surla a downtrodden black witches cat. Surla’s life is made hell by the witch who owns her. Idis the witch is cruel, menacing and a downright rotter. She pushes Surla too far one day and the cat decides to run away. But there are consequences to this..... there is a rule to the black cats law, Surla has to switch bodies with a lonesome soul. This is where Cathy the shy teenager comes in. After being outcast and bullied in school and feeling downright miserable will this be the answer to her problems?? Meanwhile witch Idis is not happy that Surla has gone and is hellbent on finding her.

I found this book to be a very light and easy read. I flew through the story as it took me no time to read it. I have read books that have had characters switch bodies, so it was quite a refreshing change to have one of them as a black cat instead of two humans switching bodies. Molly has a really easy writing style, which is just perfect for when you want a simple no nonsense read. I managed to get into to this book right from the start, with some books I have to get settled in after a couple of chapters, but not in the case of BeSwitched.

I really liked the characters in this book. My favourite would have to be Surla the black cat, I really enjoyed reading about her; both in cat and human form. I certainly look forward to reading more of her escapades in the rest of the series.

I did enjoy this light hearted book, it was fun and frothy. I will definetly be reading book two in the series, BeSwitched Witch.

This story would be suitable for 13+ readers.

Story 4/5 – Nice for a bit of light magical escapism.

Cover 3/5 – I’m not all that keen on this type of cover, however the picture is relevant to the story.

About The Author:

Molly Snow, Founder of BreezyReads.com, wrote BeSwitched when she was just sixteen. As a bestselling author’s personal assistant at age twenty, she decided to do what her boss did and self publish. At age twenty-three, BeSwitched made its debut. Snow is married to her high school crush, has a set of silly twin boys and a bob-tailed cat named Meow-Meow.

Musing Mondays #3

Musing Mondays is a weekly feature hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.  Each week MizB asks a book related question and we have to give our answers.

This week’s musing asks…

Would you choose to review a book if its description sounded interesting, but the cover was terrible?

Well that is an easy one for me to answer, the answer is yes I would still read a book even if the cover was horrid.  I'm a firm believer of not judging a book by its cover.  The main thing I look at before I choose whether or not to review a book is the  synopsis, sometimes a few sentences can really suck me into reading a book.   Just because a book doesn't have a great cover does not necessarly mean the story is going to be rubbish.

I read many books on the kindle, sometimes these do not have covers at all!  Does that mean I don't read them...... well no :P

I must add though, I have been drawn to books in bookstores purely because of a cover.  I have even been guilty of buying a book purely for the cover alone.  I have found this technique does not always work, as I have had books with the most gorgeous cover but upon reading them found I couldn't even get past the first 50 pages.
