***Review*** Lord of the Abyss by Nalini Singh

Released : 29th November 2011
Publisher: Harlequin
Series :Yes - #4 in the Royal House of Shadows series
Format :Kindle
Source : Digital ARC Netgalley
Author Site:  Nalini Singh

Goodreads Synopsis:

Once upon a time…the Blood Sorcerer vanquished the kingdom of Elden. To save their children, the queen scattered them to safety and the king filled them with vengeance. Only a magical timepiece connects the four royal heirs…and time is running out.…

As the dark Lord who condemns souls to damnation in the Abyss, Micah is nothing but a feared monster wrapped in impenetrable black armor. He has no idea he is the last heir of Elden, its last hope. Only one woman knows—the daughter of his enemy.

Liliana is nothing like her father, the Blood Sorcerer who’d cursed Micah. She sees past Micah’s armor to the prince inside. A prince whose sinful touch she craves. But first she has to brave his dark, dangerous lair and help him remember. Because they only have till midnight to save Elden.

 My Review:

I was given a copy of this book to review from Netgalley.

This book is the fourth book in the Royal House of Shadows series, and follows the story of the youngest child Micah.  It’s part of the series, but I found that I could read this book easily without having read the other books in the series; although like with any series it does benefit the reader to start from the first book.

I was really pleased to get this book as I have read some of Nalini Singh’s Psy-changeling books – which I loved.  So with this in mind I had high expectations for this book.  Well, Lord of the Abyss did not let me down; it delivered an amazing story which captured my heart, imagination and took me to another realm.

I really loved the rich and magical world that was created. There seemed to be a good mix of interesting characters which helped to pad out the story.  My favourite character was Jessa the Brownie; she was a sweet and endearing character.

I have to mention that in places there were some steamy and erotic moments, it left little to the imagination.....  But to be honest this only heightened the connection and relationship between Micah and Liliana.  This is a dark and tantalising romance story with a mixture of magical and mysterious elements.  The Lord of the Abyss was a very fierce character and it was interesting to see Liliana bring out a different side to him.

I did like the story and I thought it was very well written.  I will definitely be checking out more books in the series, they are written by different authors but I think this may give a different angle to each book, plus each book is written about the different members of the Royal Family so it will be interesting to see things from their point of view.  Each and every one of the children was sent to different parts of the realm into different lands; so I can’t wait to find out about those!

Story rating: 4/5 – I really enjoyed this mystical and magic story.

Cover Rating: 3/5 - I’ve never been a big fan of covers like this, however it does seem quite fitting to the steamy story.

Book Trailer:

About the Author:

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

On Me

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated frequently).
So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

I love Singh's works too! Especially the Guild Hunter series! You HAVE to read that one! I think it's the best out of all her books. Haha, great review! The book sounds fantastic.

This sounds very interesting. I keep hearing about this author but haven't managed to pick up one of her books yet. I probably would have skipped right over this one because of the cover. Now I'm thinking a trip to the bookstore is in order :)

Yes the cover would have turned me off too, but thankfully I have read some other books by her. I still have to read the Guild series, I have the first sitting on the bookcase waiting for me.

Thanks for commenting on my review :D

I also dislike this kind of covers... and I've already read one book by Nalini Singh and lived it, that was Angels' Blood - in fact, I need to pick up book 2 of this series to read soon, and I like the atmosphere of the story you mentioned in your review - hot, steamy, but mixed with a good storyline =D

I have only got 1 book here by Nalini but from what i've heard the books are supposed to be GREAT. This is a book from a sort of series she did with a few other people - i have a copy of the Gena Showalter book 'Lord of the Vampires' that this one kind of goes with & i LOVE it! Cant wait to get stuck in to this one!
I'm not sure why everyone would skip over this because of the cover - YUM - i think a major chunk of my books have stunning men on the front of them, they must draw me in i guess!
