***Review*** Fracture by Megan Miranda

Released : 17th January 2012
Series : No
Format :Kindle
Source : Digital ARC Netgalley
Author Site: Megan Miranda
Goodreads Synopsis:
Eleven minutes passed before Delaney Maxwell was pulled from the icy waters of a Maine lake by her best friend Decker Phillips. By then her heart had stopped beating. Her brain had stopped working. She was dead. And yet she somehow defied medical precedent to come back seemingly fine

—despite the scans that showed significant brain damage. Everyone wants Delaney to be all right, but she knows she's far from normal. Pulled by strange sensations she can't control or explain, Delaney finds herself drawn to the dying. Is her altered brain now predicting death, or causing it?

Then Delaney meets Troy Varga, who recently emerged from a coma with similar abilities. At first she's reassured to find someone who understands the strangeness of her new existence, but Delaney soon discovers that Troy's motives aren't quite what she thought. Is their gift a miracle, a freak of nature-or something much more frightening?

For fans of best-sellers like Before I Fall and If I Stay, this is a fascinating and heart-rending story about love and friendship and the fine line between life and death.

My Review:

I was given a copy of this book to review from Netgalley.

The story is about Delaney Maxwell the main protagonist.  17 year old Delaney is a carefree teenager with her whole life ahead of her.  But one accident changes all this...... whilst out with her best friend Decker they are crossing a frozen lake to meet friends when all of a sudden the ice fractures plunging Delaney into its wet, icy darkness.  Eleven minutes pass before she is pulled from the cold water, her heart has stopped beating and she has to be revived by a panic stricken Decker.  Medical professionals are left baffled, because eleven minutes is a long time for the heart and brain to stop functioning.  But Delaney is a miracle, apart from cracked ribs and bruising she is fine, her brain scan shows significant brain damage which leaves the doctors baffled. However this miracle comes with a hefty price..........Delaney experiences a strange sensation, a pull that finds her drawn to the dying.  Is she predicting death or is it something more sinister like causing it???  She meets a stranger called Troy who she finds out has a lot in common with her, there is something very dark and mysterious about Troy and Delaney needs to find out more.

This book gripped me from the start, fast paced and very addictive.  I just had to find out what happened to Delaney the main character.  I managed to finish this book in just over two days which is a sure sign of a good book.

This book is suitable for younger readers; there are no graphic or adult content.  A perfect YA novel.

I loved the writing style of this book; the words were flowing off the page.  I would definitely read more books by this author as I think this book was very well written and the story was very imaginative.  I liked the good mix of characters, some of them were deep and complex and this was shown throughout the book.

Sometimes the relationship between Delaney and Decker had me pulling my hair out in frustration; you could clearly see they liked each other but neither seemed to accept the signs.

I was really happy with the ending, it did take me by surprise and I was not expecting it; which is good as I tend not to like predictable books.

You may be wondering why I am gushing about this book but have only given it a four and a half star rating and not a five star rating, well the simple fact is that my top ratings are given to books I want to read again straight away.  I did enjoy this book a lot but I’m not itching to pick it back up straight away.  There was just a little something missing, what it is? Well I just can’t put my finger on it......

Story rating: 4.5/5 - I would recommend this book as I think it is very unique.
Cover rating: 5/5 – a beautiful and haunting cover; it certainly fits the story well.  I would pick this book up for the cover alone.

About the Author:
Megan Miranda was a scientist and high school teacher before writing Fracture, which came out of her fascination with scientific mysteries—especially those associated with the brain. Megan has a BS in biology from MIT and spent her post-college years either rocking a lab coat or reading books. I also liked this but agree there was something missing. The writing was good but the relationship between Delaney and Decker was frustrating, I agree there too.

Hmm. I'm not sure whether I want to pick this book up or not. Romances - especially those that make you want to pull your hair out because the two just aren't. getting. together. - aren't my usual fare. But I highly value writing style and endings often make the book for me.

Phew! I'm so glad that this is not a part of a series or something..just grew tired of them. Is it YA romance or a paranormal romance?

I was drawn to this book first and foremost because of the cover, but secondly because of the concept. I grew up in the north, with unbelievably cold temperatures, and ice fishing, snowmobiling, skating, etc. are all just a part of life. Needless to say, there have been plenty enough incidents where people have fallen through the ice. There was one that I can remember, where a young girl fell through the ice, and was found over an hour later. She survived, because of the extreme cold. This book reminded me of that, and my interest was instantly peaked.

Great review!

I also enjoyed this book and won an ARC through a giveaway. However, I wish that they explained it a bit more on the paranormal aspect of this book: to predict death. But I couldn't put it down and I liked it a lot!

I like reading others reviews about Fracture. It is funny to me how so many people can love a book and 1 or 2 just have issues with it. Usually I am one of the ravers when others don't like a book.
In this one, I am one of the few. I liked the book okay, it did hold my attention. The writing was amazing and the story was interesting and unique in today's world of YA books. My big problem with the book is that I was DEPRESSED and SO TICKED OFF through the whole book. I wanted to just jump into the pages and shake all of them for being such Debbie Downers and making such idiotic decisions. I just,...... arrrgh! I guess on the other side of it, Megan did a fantastic job jerking such strong emotions out of me.

Either way, it is nice to read others reviews and get different perspectives. I hate giving bad reviews. It makes me feel bad. So it's nice to see it another way! Thanks for your review. Sorry for rambling. This is what books that don't sit well with me do to me!
