Goodreads Synopsis:

Evalyn Ibarra never expected to be an accused killer and experimental prison test subject. A year ago, she was a normal college student. Now she’s been sentenced to a month in the compass room—an advanced prison obstacle course designed by the government to execute justice.

If she survives, the world will know she’s innocent.

Locked up with nine notorious and potentially psychotic criminals, Evalyn must fight the prison and dismantle her past to stay alive. But the system prized for accuracy appears to be killing at random.

She doesn’t plan on making friends.

She doesn’t plan on falling in love, either.

My Review

From just reading the synopsis I felt quite excited about this book.  I mean can you imagine what would happen if you got locked up with 9 potentially lethal criminals, it sounded like the survival of the fittest.  Yes, it does scream a little bit like a Hunger Games themed book, but that is where the similarities end.  It is more graphic and yes there are bloody deaths, but the way it plays with the prisoners is sheer evil.  You do get to see them as more than just criminals, suddenly a bit of compassion kicks in.  They have all committed crimes, but you should never judge people until you get to know the real person.

I did enjoy this book, but I wouldn't say it blew me away.  I would like to read book two in the series just to see where this goes.

Some of the characters I didn't really care about, their life in the compass room was just a blur, but the main character Evalyn was the most interesting. Evalynn was multi dimensional and a very complicated person to understand, I think as the story progressed I seemed to see a different person.

I think the main reason this didn't get full marks from me is that even though there was a lot of action in the book, it still didn't grip me fully.

Overall:
A thrilling and deadly ride

My Thoughts on the Cover:
I think the blood spatters are clever, it does hint that there will be violence and death.  I do like this cover and I like the title font and colour scheme.
